Bringing together Dental Practicioners and Engineers

Innovations in the XXI century come from interception of different fields of knowledge. Engineering and medicine, together, have a great potential to give rise to novel and improved solutions considering materials, design of restorative structures, and treatment guidelines in dentistry. On the subject of the present workshop, new brilliant ideas will emerge and both dentists and engineers will give a step forward in their common purpose - making smiles and lives more exciting..

About the BioMatDevices Workshop
This 2nd Edition

The CMEMS - Centre for Micro Electro Mechanical Systems, University of Minho will hold the second BioMatDevices Advanced Biomedical Materials and Devices Workshop, in 18th May 2019. The first edition took place at UFSC, Florianopolis, Brasil, in 2018.

The workshop is co-organized by Portugal - CMEMS, UMinho, USA - New York University College of Dentistry, Brazil - CERMAT, UFSC and Germany - Institute of Biomaterials and takes place every year in one of the 3 continents.

This edition will also include the following institutions as part of the organization, namely:

  • IUCS - CESPU - Instituto Universitário de Ciências da Saúde
  • ESSVS - CESPU - Escola Superior de Saúde do Vale do Sousa
  • UFP – Universidade Fernando Pessoa
  • FDMUL - Faculdade de Medicina Dentária da Universidade de Lisboa
  • FMUC - Faculdade de Medicina da Universidade de Coimbra
  • SOPIO - Sociedade Portuguesa de Implantologia e Osteointegração

The workshop will focus on two main areas:

  1. 1. the peri-implantitis and its relationship with the characteristics of the implants and abutments, such as materials / surfaces / design / stress distribution / electromagnetic functions, multifunctional materials, among other;
  2. 2. minimally invasive approaches - dental solutions (implants, prostheses, aesthetics, restorative materials, treatment guidelines ...), new engineering solutions (new multifunctional surfaces, short and narrow implants, surface functionalization, all on teeth, ultra-thin ceramics, zirconia adhesion, among other) and its influence on clinical success.

The 3 well-ranked posters (defined by the organizers) will be awarded with a Diploma and return of the registration fee. The following areas will be considered.

Brilliant ideas Awards

Brilliant Ideas for Engineering Solutions for main challenges in the dentistry may be sent till 2 days before the workshop. Selected ideas (defined by the organizers) considered brilliant ideas are candidates for the following awards

o 1st Prize Award:
A diploma and 1.000 € to be used in consumables/services/prototypes in the development of the idea (defined by the organizers);

o 2nd Prize Award:
A diploma and 750 € to be used in consumables/services/prototypes in the development of the idea (defined by the organizers);

o 3rd Prize Award:
A diploma and 500 € to be used in consumables/services/prototypes in the development of the idea (defined by the organizers);

Notice:
o the organization reserves the right not to award prizes if it does not consider them brilliant ideas;

o The ideas must be developed in the CMEMS research center. Eventual Intelectual Property protection must be agreed with the CMEMS research center.
